I\u00a0used some of the same research from the cowgirl book in writing Around Nederland<\/strong>.<\/em> With some previously unpublished historic photos, Around Nederland<\/em><\/strong> traces the history of the Nederland area through three boom and bust cycles.<\/p>\n Living in the Rocky Mountains surrounded by millions of mountain pine beetles was the inspiration for The Mountain Pine Beetle\u2014Tiny but Mighty<\/em><\/strong>, a book for children ages 8 to 12. Pine beetles have attacked some of the trees in\u00a0my yard, and I’ve\u00a0been taking pictures of the beetles and the damage they cause for years. David Brooks<\/a> contributed the wonderfully zany illustrations that complement the photos and text.<\/p>\n In 2014, my friend Alan Apt asked if I would be interested in helping him with an update to his hiking guide, Afoot &\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Afield: Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Rocky Mountain National Park<\/em><\/strong>. The result of our collaboration was published in June 2015 and includes 184 (whew!) trails, photos, and maps. We also collaborated on another guidebook, Ski Touring Routes: Colorado’s Front Range.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Rocky Mountain National Park Dining Room Girl: The Summer of 1926 at the Horseshoe Inn<\/em>,<\/strong> another collaborative effort, also came out in 2015, just in time for the Park’s 100th birthday.\u00a0The book includes letters and journal entries from co-author Lee Tillotson’s great aunt, who traveled from Iowa after graduation from college to work at the Horseshoe Inn, one of the long-gone lodges in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a rainy summer, and she had plenty of time to hike, ride horses, and explore the new Park. Lee and I found lots of old photos and maps, and included some history of the Horseshoe Inn as seen through the eyes of an adventurous young woman.<\/p>\n What am I working on now?<\/strong> I’m using all that research I did into the history of the cowgirls in the Wild West and writing a fiction series about cowgirl spies. It all started when I saw a post online about a letter the famous Annie Oakley wrote to President McKinley at the start of the Spanish-American War offering the services of fifty lady sharpshooters for the war. She was, of course, turned down, but it made me wonder what she did after that? Maybe organize a ring of lady sharpshooters who could use their skills to change the course of history?<\/p>\n What do I do when I’m not writing or researching my next magazine article or book?<\/strong> Hiking, skiing, biking, gardening, painting, and pottery compete for my free time.
